School Overview
Located in Hammersmith, West London, St Paul’s Girls’ School is one of the most academically selective independent day schools in the country. Established in 1904, it offers a demanding and intellectually rich curriculum that encourages girls to think deeply and develop a genuine love of learning. Small class sizes and outstanding teaching ensure pupils receive thoughtful and individualised support.
The school provides an extensive co-curricular programme, with music and the performing arts playing a central role in school life. Alongside this, girls are encouraged to explore wide-ranging interests, join societies, pursue sport, and participate in community outreach. St Paul’s places considerable value on personal development, social responsibility, and the confidence that comes from taking part in a full and busy school life.
Scholarship Award
Music scholarships at St Paul’s Girls’ are awarded following:
A video application,
A practical audition, and
An interview with the Director of Music and specialist staff.
Scholars receive £1,800 per year towards lessons on two instruments or voice.
In addition, Music Exhibitions may be offered at the discretion of the Director of Music. Exhibitions contribute towards lessons on one instrument/voice, currently valued at £900 per year. Both scholarships and exhibitions are normally tenable for five years.
Means-tested bursaries are also available, potentially covering full fees.
Eligibility
11+ Entry
Candidates are expected to be performing at around Grade 5 distinction on their first instrument. In practice, many successful applicants play above this level and show strong musicianship, commitment, and potential.
16+ Entry
Applicants should be performing at Grade 8 standard on their principal instrument. Competitive candidates will typically present repertoire beyond Grade 8 and demonstrate maturity, ensemble experience, and confident musical communication.
Application Timeline
Video application deadline: November
Notification of audition shortlist: January (after the main entrance assessment)
Live auditions: January
Families should check the latest admissions guidance each year, as exact dates can vary.
Audition
The initial video recording helps the school assess musicality, technical ability, and readiness for the audition stage. Candidates should choose pieces that suit them well, demonstrate fluency, and allow their personality to shine through. As with all scholarship applications, secure, polished playing is far more effective than attempting repertoire that is too demanding.
11+ Audition
Candidates perform prepared pieces on their main instrument and may be asked to sing simple exercises. The audition usually includes sight-reading and aural tests to assess musical responsiveness and listening skills.
An informal interview explores the pupil’s musical interests, experience, and enthusiasm for joining the department.
16+ Audition
Auditions typically last around 20 minutes. Candidates perform two contrasting pieces or excerpts totalling no more than ten minutes.
The first-study piece should last at least six minutes. Students may bring their own accompanist or use one provided by the school.
Sight-reading and aural tests follow, alongside a friendly conversation about the student’s musical background and aspirations.
To prepare for the audition, it is advisable to have specialised lessons with a music teacher with experience in scholarships. Some families opt to have meetings with Ralph Allwood MBE, ex-Director of Music at Eton College for 26 years, or enroll in our music scholarship course to help give your child the edge they need to stand out.
As advised in our Ultimate Guide to Music Scholarships, it is strongly recommended to begin preparation for scholarship auditions at least 12 months beforehand.
St Paul's Musical Legacy
The Music Department is one of the school’s most active and inspiring hubs. Pupils have access to a wide range of ensembles, including:
Symphony orchestras
Chamber groups
Large and small choirs
Jazz, contemporary, and close-harmony groups
This breadth allows girls to explore different styles, collaborate with others, and grow as versatile musicians.
Performance opportunities are plentiful. Students take part in regular concerts, lunchtime recitals, chamber platforms, and large-scale events both within school and at external venues. These experiences help nurture confidence, resilience, and a lifelong enjoyment of making music.
Former pupils have gone on to impressive musical pathways — from conservatoire study and international performance to composition, conducting, and music education — demonstrating the strength of the department’s teaching and ethos.
Conclusion
With its rich musical life, exceptional teaching, and forward-looking educational philosophy, St Paul’s Girls’ School is a superb destination for committed young musicians. The 11+ and 16+ music scholarships provide talented pupils with structured support, high-level opportunities, and a nurturing environment in which to excel.
